Siti came from Banyuwangi, East Java. She is 20 years olds; she used to work in a store with only IDR 500,000.00 as her monthly salary. Her father is a farmer and her mother works outside of Indonesia, so she can only send a small amount of money back home. Siti’s family income is IDR 1,000,000.00 per month. She really wants to continue to university but she doesn’t have the money and she doesn’t want her mother to work longer abroad to pay for her education. Siti joined Bali WISE Skilled Education Program to learn more about the hospitality and tourism industry. Actually, Siti already married in 2016 but her husband left her in December 2016 and has not been able to be contacted since. Right now, Siti just wants to be independent and her main goal is to make her parents proud and to make her family’s financial situation better.
Lila is 20 years old, her mother passed away since she was 4 years old. Her father is 50 year old and has remarried. Since her father already has a new family, Lila lives with her aunt since she was in grade school. Her aunt has 4 children and doesn’t work, she depends on her husband’s income, who is a driver with a monthly income of IDR 1,000,000.00 per month. Even when her aunt and uncle struggle to feed everyone in the family, they always help and support Lila in her studies. After Lila finished high school, she didn’twant to be a burden anymore. Lila traveled from Situbondo to Bali looking for work. She became a cashier at a store with a monthly income of IDR 900,000.00. She heard about the Bali WISE Skilled Education Program from her friend and she thought to herself that if she continues working at a store, she won’t be able to fix her life. Lila joined Bali WISE so she can have a better job and salary.
Merry is a Bali WISE student from Flores, she is 18 years old. Merry’s bravery is remarkable; she traveled from Flores to East Java by herself to find a job. She used to work at a bakery store to help her family’s financial situation. Merry’s father has passed away and her mother is a stay at home mother who sometimes farms for extra incomes. She has two older siblings, the first one is an honorary teacher and the second one is unemployed. Merry’s family income is IDR 900,000.00 per month but very unstable. Sometimes, they struggled to find food to eat because they don’t have any money. Merry promises to get as much money as possible, she is not ashamed to work hard as long as it’s legal. She wants to help her mother to open her own culinary business and to help her family’s financial situation.
Jeni came from Karangasem, she is 18 years old. Her father is a farmer and her mother is a warung coffee seller, their total incomes are IDR 800,000.00 per month. She is the second daughter of three. Her older sibling works as a government honorary employee, but still asks for money to Jeni’s parent since the salary from the government is too small. Jeni really wants to work in hotel, be independent and to make her parents happy. She wants to buy a motorcycle and to pay for her younger sibling school fees. Jeni always said to “enjoy your life and be strong.”
Tantri’s family traveled from Karangasem to Denpasar to seek a better life. Tantri’s mother is a cook for a warung and her father is a farmer. Her family income is only IDR 1,000,000.00 per month. Tantri has two older siblings, but they’re already married and thus cannot help Tantri’s family financial situation. Tantri is 18 years old and very cheerful; she has big hopesfor when she joins Bali WISE. Tantri struggles with her English but she is confident in learning it more and getting better so she can work in the hospitality and tourism industry. At first, Tantri was not accepted at Bali WISE, but she never gave up. She learned and asked her friend to help her study. After 3 weeks of training, she came to Bali WISE and could answer all the English questions perfectly. Tantri used to work in Kedaton Restaurant as a waitress. By joining Bali WISE, Tantri wants to gain a better employment and be a better person each day, she always said that “If you have the will, you’ll find a way.”
