Dewi came from Gianyar, Bali. She is 18 years old and the first child of two. Her father is managing Balinese ceremonial tools at Sekah Ganesh Foundation, with a salary of only IDR 800,000.00 per month. Dewi loves to cook and wants to work in the Food and Beverages Product area. She hopes someday to be able to continue her studies to university. She is confident that after she graduated from Bali WISE, she could get a good job and able to pay for her own university fees. Even though sometimes Dewi is not confident in herself, she sees that Bali WISE could be a way to build her mindset so she could be a better person and could make her parents proud. She studies hard with her friends, especially in English class. Everytime she doesn’t understand a certain subject, she would ask her friends to teach her more. Dewi believes that she can achieve everything through dedication and hard work.
Ayu is the daughter of a warung coffee seller, both of her parents are sick which makes them not able to work. Her mother is obese and her father is disabled since Ayu was 3 years old. Ayu lived with her grandparents who are still working as farmers with a monthly incomes of IDR 900,000.00. Ayu has 1 older sibling and she had a twin brother who passed away after birth. In her Hindu religion, it is believed that Ayu’s family needs to do a big ceremony for her twin brother who passed away to get rid of bad luck. Her family cannot afford that ceremony until Ayu is 18 years old. The day she was able to do her family ceremony is the day she also got accepted at Bali WISE. Ayu really hopes that she can get a good job since nobody in her family is working. Her older brother is unemployed since he quit his last job as a construction worker because he hasn’tbeen paid for a whole year. Her family survives only by Ayu’s grandparents’ money. Ayu wants to get a good job so she can support her family.
Siti came from Banyuwangi, East Java. She is 20 years olds; she used to work in a store with only IDR 500,000.00 as her monthly salary. Her father is a farmer and her mother works outside of Indonesia, so she can only send a small amount of money back home. Siti’s family income is IDR 1,000,000.00 per month. She really wants to continue to university but she doesn’t have the money and she doesn’t want her mother to work longer abroad to pay for her education. Siti joined Bali WISE Skilled Education Program to learn more about the hospitality and tourism industry. Actually, Siti already married in 2016 but her husband left her in December 2016 and has not been able to be contacted since. Right now, Siti just wants to be independent and her main goal is to make her parents proud and to make her family’s financial situation better.
Lila is 20 years old, her mother passed away since she was 4 years old. Her father is 50 year old and has remarried. Since her father already has a new family, Lila lives with her aunt since she was in grade school. Her aunt has 4 children and doesn’t work, she depends on her husband’s income, who is a driver with a monthly income of IDR 1,000,000.00 per month. Even when her aunt and uncle struggle to feed everyone in the family, they always help and support Lila in her studies. After Lila finished high school, she didn’twant to be a burden anymore. Lila traveled from Situbondo to Bali looking for work. She became a cashier at a store with a monthly income of IDR 900,000.00. She heard about the Bali WISE Skilled Education Program from her friend and she thought to herself that if she continues working at a store, she won’t be able to fix her life. Lila joined Bali WISE so she can have a better job and salary.
Merry is a Bali WISE student from Flores, she is 18 years old. Merry’s bravery is remarkable; she traveled from Flores to East Java by herself to find a job. She used to work at a bakery store to help her family’s financial situation. Merry’s father has passed away and her mother is a stay at home mother who sometimes farms for extra incomes. She has two older siblings, the first one is an honorary teacher and the second one is unemployed. Merry’s family income is IDR 900,000.00 per month but very unstable. Sometimes, they struggled to find food to eat because they don’t have any money. Merry promises to get as much money as possible, she is not ashamed to work hard as long as it’s legal. She wants to help her mother to open her own culinary business and to help her family’s financial situation.
