Nola was born and raised in Batam as the first of two children. She lived with her grandmother in order to help her with household duties until she graduated from elementary school. Nola then continued living with her parents. Her father worked as a motorbike mechanic, earning rarely enough money to cover the family’s daily needs.
After she graduated from high school in 2013, she wanted to apply for college but her parents could not afford it. Instead she started supporting her mother with selling traditional cakes in a simple food stall. At the same time Nola took on various daily jobs on the weekends and worked at a photocopy shop during the week, providing her with a small earning. Nola was also active as an English language tutor for the children in her neighbourhood.
She heard about the Bali WISE program from her friend, and she hopes to be able to deepen her English skills during the six months at the Bali WISE campus. Nola wants to get a quality job in order to provide a better living for her parents and better education for her younger sister. Ultimately her biggest dream is to save money to be able to study English literature.
