Her father passed away 2 years ago due to health issues and left her mother to work in a traditional market to survive. At the age of 15, Sumardi had to stop her education due to financial reasons. She then found a job as a housekeeper to save some money for continuing her education until high school level. After working for 2 years, she and her mother had enough money to send her to high school. After 3 years had passed, she graduated from high school in 2013 and worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Nevertheless, 4 years of working in that restaurant did not give her a chance for better career growth. Until her older brother told her about the Bali WISE program. Sumardi came along with her brother to apply for our program. Ni Luh Reniasih

19-year-old Reni is from Karangasem, East Bali. She is the oldest child and has 3 younger brothers. Her parents work as farmers, earning a very limited income of only USD 50 per month which makes it hard to even meet their daily needs. To survive, Reni and her brothers went to the rice field every afternoon for catching snails, cooked them and sold them around the village. They did that everyday after school to generate more income. After graduating from high school, Reni got to know the Bali WISE program in Facebook and she made the decision to join the program. With better skills and more education she wants to find better employment to fulfill her goal of being able to support her family and helping to pay for her 3 younger brothers’ education.

Afriana Solistianis Putry

19-year-old Afriana is from Labuan Bajo, Flores, and the oldest of three siblings. Her father works as a farmer with an income of around IDR 500.000 (approx. USD 36). Because both of her brothers already attend senior and junior high school, the family’s meager financial resources do not allow it to afford Afriana’s further education in university as well. Thanks to a referral in her hometown, she heard of Bali WISE and joined our program to receive the training and education that she otherwise not could have afforded.
