Ni Kadek Ari Oktavirani
Ni Kadek Ari Oktavirani

Ari has graduated from vocational high school and has the dream to work on a cruise ship. Both her parents work as bamboo weavers and sell ceremonial bamboo baskets usually used for Ngaben (Balinese Cremation Ceremony). They sell them for only around IDR 1,200 each and since a cremation is an event not held everyday, this does not provide a regular income. Ari knows, to help her parents, she would need a proper job with a reasonable salary, which she can only find if she will continue with her education.  She is very optimistic that the hospitality training at Bali WISE will provide her with the necessary skills and knowledge to fulfill her dream and enable her to gain enough money on a cruise ship to support her family.

Ni Kadek Mariani

Mariani is 17 years old and from Karangasem, East Bali. Her parents got divorced and started new families when she was still a child, which is why she used to live only with her grandmother and sister. In school, Mariani was an active student and once won a running competition. After coming home from school, she used to help her grandmother selling food. This situation has changed last year, because her grandmother had to move to her aunt in Denpasar due to the volcanic activities of Mount Agung. Now, Mariani lives with her father and step mother, who make a living by selling traditional food in the market. Mariani’s motivation to join Bali WISE is driven by the wish to improve her family’s financial condition and to provide for the education of her step brother and step sister.

Ani’s father is a freelancer who only gets seasonal employment, making it a struggle to support a family of seven, including a grandmother with a walking disorder. To help her family, Ani sometimes makes money by picking flowers, earning IDR 10,000 – 20,000 (approx. less than USD 1) per day. Knowing of the high tuition fees of universites, she almost lost her hopes to further pursue her education after graduating from high school. But fortunately, at her school she was told about the opportunities at Bali WISE, which made her excited and gave her back motivation and new energy to follow her dreams.

Dani was born and raised in a family of five. Her parents work as freelancers and make around IDR 1,000,000 per month (approx. USD 72). When she was in fourth grade of elementary school, Dani’s parents sent her to an orphanage where she spent most of her childhood until she graduated from middle school. When attending vocational high school, Dani helped her parents by doing the laundry for her neighbors and working part-time in one of the malls in her hometown. Now, she is motivated to gain more knowledge and skills at Bali WISE to achieve her major life goal: working on a cruise ship and supporting her parents even more.
