Kardila is a 20 year old, from Pontianak, West Kalimantan. She is the 7th of 8 children. Before Kardila was born, her parents worked as a rubber farmer. A few years ago, Kardila’s father broke his back because he got hit by a falling tree while he was in the woods. Since she lives in a small village, there’s no doctor around and there’s no land road nearby. Her father’s condition worsened each day since they can only access a traditional remedy. Her mother needs to work non-stop and also nurse her father. Kardila’s mother earns IDR 1,000,000.00 per month with 10 family members to feed. Her mother decided to move to a more modern village so Kardila and her siblings could get a better education. After Kardila graduated from high school, she travelled to Pontianak to work several jobs. She has worked as a sales clerk, waitress, barista and cashier. Kardila barely survived living in the city with her low income of between IDR 800,000.00 to IDR 1,000,000.00. Luckily, Kardila’s best friend, Lusiana, graduated from Bali WISE in intake 25. Kardila applied to the Bali WISE Skills Education Program, hoping for a better job with a better income than before.
