Welcoming independence with games and traditional competitions is a common sight in our community. However, Bali WISE students celebrated in a uniquely impactful way this time. On August 14, 2026, 30 students from Bali WISE Intake 66, alongside our staff, joined forces for a beach cleanup at Sekeh Beach. The vibrant spirit of independence was expressed through a genuine love for our environment.
Greeting the Morning Sun in Red and White
To enliven the atmosphere, students dressed up in August 17th themed outfits following the guidance of the R.O.L.E. staff. Waking up at the break of dawn to prepare, everyone departed from the BW campus at 6:00 AM sharp in two buses. Their journey was greeted by the rising sun. Upon arriving at Sekeh Beach, everyone gathered to proudly sing the national anthem, Indonesia Raya.
Following the briefing, the trash hunt began. The 30 Intake 66 students, R.O.L.E staff, and volunteers from Cuca Restaurant combed through every corner of Sekeh Beach. A wide variety of waste was collected, ranging from plastics and glass bottles to aluminum packaging and residual waste. After an hour of hard work, all the collected trash was brought together to be weighed.
Once the search concluded, the top three collectors were announced: Anyes with 11 kg, Mita with 13 kg, and Mei leading with 14 kg. Next, the best dressed students, Ayu, Okta, and Nisa, were called to the front to receive their prizes. Afterwards, everyone worked together to load the collected waste onto a pickup truck to be transported to the ZeroWaste Center for sorting.
Freedom From the Waste Crisis
Upon arriving at the ZeroWaste Center, every student pitched in to sort the waste as usual. This beach cleanup was truly special as a meaningful display of environmental action. Through this initiative, Bali WISE students learned to love and protect our ecosystem firsthand. While this is a small step, we hope that as more Bali WISE students become educated, our reach will grow into a larger, more conscious community. This is our way of educating others so we can achieve true freedom, not just independence in name, but freedom from the waste crisis still affecting our nation.
