For their second project, WISE in Action has collected books as donations and delivered the books to an orphanage in East Lombok to support the children’s literacy.

WISE in Action by Bali WISE

WISE in Action is a Bali WISE social service initiative, which recruits Bali WISE alumni to develop their organizational and leadership skills. Since the start at the end of February, WISE in Action has now completed two projects; a collaboration project with JOVI on Hydroponic System workshop in Komodo Island and a book distribution project in East Indonesia.

Children’s Literacy

Unsurprisingly, the literacy level of children in Indonesia is still low. Data from UNESCO even stated that the percentage of children achieving minimum proficiency in reading was decreasing to 25% in 2018. Therefore, WISE in Action feels the need to participate in providing books to children, especially in East Indonesia, which has the lowest literacy.

Books for Children in East Lombok

After sorting out the books, the WISE in Action members decided to donate them to a small orphanage located in a rural village in East Lombok. The orphanage was founded in 1967, yet has a small number of books in their library. We believe that through this donation, the children can improve their literacy skills by having more access to good reading materials.

To wrap it up, let’s think about what Frank Serafini once said: “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book”.
