Karangasem area in Bali is the area where earthquakes happen most frequently. The recent earthquake in October 2021, annihilated several homes, schools, and even lives. The government and the local NGOs have been collaborating to help those affected by providing food, medical aid and shelter.

While humanitarian aid has thankfully set in motion, there are still others who are in desperate need of help. Animals in the Karangasem area are also affected by the earthquake; some have been left without food and clean water. PELITA, a Bali WISE alumni social group, has partnered with BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association) to support these animals.

Fundraising by PELITA

With the untimely passing of Bali WISE’s two beloved guard dogs, Mocha and Avo, as a result of food poisoning, PELITA is resolved to dedicate this project to Mocha and Avo as a thank you gesture for always safeguarding the Bali WISE campus from harm.

With the fundraising campaign that started on 8th November until 18th November, PELITA raised Rp. 4,325,000 which enabled them to purchase 200 kgs of dog food and 60 kgs of cat food.

The Distribution

PELITA’s crew went to the Ban Village region in Karangasem alongside BAWA to distribute the dog and cat food. The BAWA team also brought supplies for the villagers, such as water gallons and tarps.

Getting to the village was a challenging journey, as landslides and fallen trees due to the earthquakes caused many obstacles on the road. Only 4WD (four wheel drive) vehicles can traverse such terrain, and even then, there are treacherous cliffs on both sides of the road, making the distribution process significantly slower and risky.

Nevertheless, PELITA and BAWA were able to distribute the dog and cat foods safely and even got the chance to talk with the villagers to see what kind of other necessities they would need. The people of Ban Village in Karangasem were very welcoming and humble, making the trip worthwhile.

Thank you for the donation!

We wish to thank all who made this project possible. Also, a big thanks to the BAWA crew for allowing PELITA to participate in this beautiful project after this tragic event. For those who want to know more about PELITA, please follow their Instagram at @pelitabybaliwise.
