In a time of crisis, a community comes together. This blog post sheds light on the heartwarming efforts of Bali WISE alumni through the PELITA project, as they reach out to support the scavenger community affected by a recent fire incident at the Suwung Landfill.
The Suwung Landfill, a familiar sight on the island of Bali, recently experienced a devastating fire. However, the impact rippled beyond the landfill itself. It left the scavenger community in the area in a state of distress. With the fire and the smoke it generated, their health and livelihoods were at risk. As a result, many scavengers were forced to evacuate to safer areas, away from the choking smoke. Some returned to their hometowns across Java, while others sought refuge with their relatives in Bali. The fire was a cruel blow to their lives.
Responding to this dire situation, the Bali WISE alumni, through the PELITA project, initiated a donation drive to provide essential supplies to the affected scavenger community. The donations included:
- 100 kg of Rice: A vital staple to ensure the affected families had access to sustenance.
- 5 Boxes of Instant Noodles: A quick and convenient food source during this emergency.
- 5 Boxes of Masks: Essential for protecting against the harmful effects of the smoke and maintaining respiratory health.
- 300 Pieces of Recycled Soaps: Hygiene and sanitation items to ensure personal cleanliness and well-being.
These donations were a lifeline, addressing immediate needs and providing a glimmer of hope during these challenging times.
The distribution of these vital supplies was meticulously coordinated with the guidance of Bapak Nyoman, a respected figure overseeing the scavenger community in the affected area. His presence proved invaluable in ensuring the aid reached those who needed it most. Bapak Nyoman’s authority and the trust he held within the community ensured a smooth, fair, and efficient distribution process. The assistance of someone held in such high regard was vital in establishing trust and guaranteeing that the aid reached those in need.
The scavenger community members expressed their hope for a swift resolution to the fire situation, allowing them to return to their normal activities as soon as possible. Their gratitude for the support from the Bali WISE alumni is palpable. In times of adversity, seeing the community unite and extend a helping hand to those who need it most is inspiring.
The Bali WISE by R.O.L.E. Foundation team would like to say thank you to our beloved Bali WISE alumni and also to our staff, Ms. Novi Antari, for taking the initiatives in making this project possible.
