Securing the health of our environment is a continuous effort, a standard we strive to uphold in every Bali WISE class. On July 17, 2026, 30 students from Intake 66 participated in a beach cleanup hosted by ZeroWaste Center at Kelan Beach alongside staff and volunteers. This marked the very first cleanup for this Intake. Beyond clearing the shorelines, the students learned proper waste segregation and contributed to the quarterly charity bazaar organized by the R.O.L.E. Foundation.
From Coastal Cleanup to Community Bazaar
As usual, the Bali WISE students set off from campus at 06:00 AM, embarking on their journey with high spirits and eager hearts. Upon arriving at Kelan Beach, under the guidance and supervision of R.O.L.E. Foundation staff, the students gathered at the meeting point alongside participating volunteers. Following a brief briefing, each student picked up a trash bag and safety gloves before diving into the search for inorganic waste across every corner of the beach. After nearly two hours of dedicated teamwork, the group successfully collected 237 kilograms of waste.
Once the cleanup at Kelan Beach was complete, the Intake 66 group headed to the ZeroWaste Center. Upon arrival, they were divided into three working groups. Working together within their teams, the students learned to identify various types of waste, such as single use plastics, straws, and bottle waste. They also put this knowledge into practice by sorting the collected trash into its respective categories over the course of two hours.
Afterward, the students stepped up to assist staff in preparing for the bazaar. The bazaar itself is a ZeroWaste Center charity initiative held once every three months, allowing local community members to exchange points earned by submitting waste for groceries, clothing, and stationery. Intake 66 actively participated in various roles, from managing registration and calculating points to assisting at stalls for groceries, snacks, clothing, and stationery. Each student handled her assigned tasks with deep responsibility and enthusiasm until the bazaar concluded.
Preparing Intake 66 to Become Pioneers of Environmental and Community Empowerment
This first beach cleanup and bazaar experience for Intake 66 was a memorable and smooth success. By involving Intake 66 in beach cleanups, we aim to educate our students and heighten their awareness of current environmental crises. Through these practical activities, they learn to take active responsibility for protecting the environment and reducing the use of single use items that contribute to persistent waste through waste sorting. Furthermore, through the bazaar, we hope our students learn to engage meaningfully with the local community, becoming pioneers in initiatives that empower people both ecologically and economically while executing every assigned task with excellence and responsibility.
