The final months of 2023 were a whirlwind of impactful initiatives for PELITA, showcasing the unwavering dedication and generosity of its alumni. From providing essential sustenance to communities near the Suwung Landfill to fostering marine biodiversity through coral reef restoration in Nusa Dua, and bringing sustainable energy to homes with solar power in Tejakula, PELITA’s projects touched diverse facets of community well-being. These endeavors, powered by the enthusiastic participation and financial contributions of PELITA alumni, underscore the organization’s commitment to creating lasting positive change.
Food Distribution to Suwung Landfill
PELITA provided food ingredients such as tempe, cabbage, carrot, egg noodle, long bean, and tauge in collaboration with the Ragam Foundation. We prepared the nasi bungkus that was distributed to the Suwung Landfill and the surrounding community together. We also gave the food to several foundations in Denpasar.
The are five alumni involved in this project. We cannot invite more alumni to participate, although there is limited space at the Ragam Foundation. The other issue is the state of the environment in the vicinity of the Suwung Landfill, particularly the foul odor. The situation is crowded enough that they can resume normal operations shortly after the fire incident. The scavengers are working as usual, and their numbers are not dependent on the nasi bungkus that we prepare, so many of them are unable to receive the nasi bungkus.
Nusa Dua Coral Reef Restoration
In collaboration with Bali Blue Harmony, the R.O.L.E. Foundation and PELITA planted 150 coral fragments at the Nusa Dua coral garden.
So far, there are 11 alumni that participated and everything is running smoothly, the only challenge is that some alumni cannot swim and thus cannot participate in the garden planting activity. The wind and waves are still stable enough for us to be safe.
Powering Homes with Solar Home Systems
According to the information we have, two families are without power in their homes. Based on that issue, the Bali WISE alumni have donated a solar home system to each needy family. Aside from that, we supply them with daily necessities like rice, eggs, egg noodles, sugar, coffee, detergent, bath soap, dishwasher soap, and cooking oil.
Access to their house from the main road is impossible by car and dangerous by motorcycle. We had no choice but to walk through the path or small road that ran alongside the ravine, carrying everything we had prepared. Because of that condition, we just allowed two alumni that participate in the project. The weather also makes things difficult. The Tejakula area was so hot and dry that day that the road we had to take was dusty, but overall the installation ran smoothly and they were happy with all the things we gave.
In Conclusion..
PELITA successfully executed all planned projects in November 2023, demonstrating the commitment and enthusiasm of its alumni. The community’s efforts not only involved direct participation in various activities but also included generous financial contributions from alumni. PELITA continues to strive towards creating a positive impact on communities, fostering alumni connections, and achieving its overarching mission. The organization looks forward to expanding its influence and leaving a lasting impression on the communities it serves.
