Luri is the oldest of four children living in the remote village of Seraya and was expected to look after her younger siblings from an early age. In secondary school, she worked as a storekeeper at her teacher’s shop to pay for her tuition, and also doing laundry for neighbours, door to door.
Luri’s father is a farmer and her mother crafts palm leaf baskets for ceremonial offerings, earning about $3 a day. Luri parents were planning to send her to Jakarta to work as a maid at the age of 14 and she was only able to finish high school through the support of the Carolia Foundation, which collaborates with Baliwise. When she finished school the Carolia Foundation encouraged her to join Bali WISE. With her parent’s support Luri finally left her village in order to join the program.
After studying hard to improve her skills and English, Luri spend three months work experience in the spa at Alila Villa Uluwatu, this helped her gain a job at the Grand Hyatt Hotel as a Spa Therapist as soon as she graduated. Today Luri wants to give back, and in her free time helps teach yoga at Bali WISE. Luri’s dream is to build a yoga center in her village.
“I am really grateful because Bali WISE gave me the opportunity to learned and improved my skills. It has given me better future prospects so I didn’t end up as a bamboo weaver” Said Luri.
